BBL Istanbul: A US Patient’s Honest Story 2026
By Ashley Reyes, 32, Miami, Florida
BBL Istanbul. I want to start with the truth that nobody in the BBL industry will tell you: I was terrified.
I had been thinking about getting a Brazilian Butt Lift for almost six years. I’d watched friends get them in Miami. I’d watched the Instagram accounts. I’d seen the dramatic before-and-afters. But every time I started seriously researching BBL surgery in the United States, I came across the same headlines — surgeons under investigation, patients dying, clinics that look like factories, BBL with the highest mortality rate of any cosmetic procedure.
And then I’d read the prices: $15,000 to $25,000 in Miami. $20,000 to $30,000 in New York. Add anaesthesia. Add hospital fees. Add medications. Add the post-op compression garments. Add the time off work I couldn’t really afford.
I shelved the idea every time. Until last year, when a girlfriend from work came back from Istanbul with the most incredible BBL results I had ever seen — and the price she’d paid was a fraction of what I’d been quoted in the US.
This is my honest story of getting a BBL in Istanbul at Estelux Clinic. What it cost, what actually happened, what recovery was really like, and whether — six months later — I’d recommend it to other US women.
Why I Wanted a BBL
I’m Latina. I have always wanted curves. I worked out for years — squats, lunges, glute bridges, hip thrusts — and I built some muscle, but my body shape just doesn’t naturally hold fat in my glutes. I’d lose two pounds and my butt would disappear before my stomach.
I’d tried fillers in my late twenties. They lasted a year, cost almost as much as a BBL, and the results were subtle at best. I wanted something permanent. I wanted to look like myself, just with the body I’d always pictured in my head.
The BBL in Istanbul at Estelux gave me exactly that.
Why Not the United States?
Let me be clear: there are excellent BBL surgeons in the US. There are also a lot of bad ones, and the bad ones are killing people.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, BBL has historically had the highest mortality rate of any cosmetic procedure — primarily because of fat embolism risks when fat is injected too deeply. The Aesthetic Society now recommends ultrasound guidance during fat injection to ensure it stays in the subcutaneous layer above the muscle.
Most US clinics offering BBLs at the prices I was seeing online — $5,000-$8,000 specials in Miami — were not using ultrasound guidance. They were doing five, six, sometimes seven BBLs a day. The famous “BBL factories” of Miami.
The reputable surgeons I consulted with — the ones I actually trusted — all quoted me $15,000-$25,000 for the surgery alone. That’s before anaesthesia, hospital fees, garments, medications, lymphatic drainage massages, and time off work. I was looking at $25,000-$35,000 all in.
For one procedure. That I might end up needing a touch-up on.
I just couldn’t justify it.
How I Found Estelux Istanbul
My friend Sofia got her BBL at Estelux in March 2025. I saw her in November at our friend’s wedding and could not believe how good her results were. Natural shape. Beautiful proportions. She moved like a normal person — no awkward “BBL pillow life” stories, no chronic pain, no asymmetry.
She told me her surgeon was Op. Dr. Uğurlu. She told me she’d paid less than $7,000 for the entire trip — the surgery, hospital, hotel, transfers, aftercare, everything.
I started researching that night. I was sceptical. Medical tourism scares me — for good reason. There are bad clinics in Istanbul too, and some of them have killed people. But the more I dug into Estelux specifically, the more I felt comfortable.
What stood out:
- Op. Dr. Uğurlu is board-certified through the Turkish Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery Society — equivalent to American Board certification
- He was trained at Istanbul University Çapa Faculty of Medicine — Turkey’s most prestigious medical school
- The clinic is a member of the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS)
- He does one BBL patient per day — not the assembly-line approach
- He uses ultrasound guidance during fat transfer
I sent a WhatsApp message at 10pm on a Thursday. I expected to hear back the next day. I got a personalised, detailed response within 25 minutes. Not a copy-paste template. Specific answers to my specific questions.
That single response told me a lot about how this clinic operated.
The Consultation Process
Everything started with photos. I sent front, side, and back images via WhatsApp along with my goals. Dr. Uğurlu’s response addressed me by name and explained exactly what would be possible with my body type — including the realistic limitations.
He told me, point-blank, that I didn’t have enough donor fat for the dramatic, exaggerated BBL look popular on Instagram. My results would be natural — adding shape and proportion, not creating something my body couldn’t sustain. He said this in the first message.
I appreciated that more than I can express. Most US surgeons I’d consulted with had been willing to promise me whatever I wanted, regardless of whether my body could support it.
A video consultation followed a week later. He spent 45 minutes with me. He answered every question. He showed me realistic before-and-after examples from previous patients with similar body types. He was direct about the recovery, the limitations, and the things that could go wrong.
I booked my BBL Istanbul surgery for January 2026.
The Cost — Complete Transparency
This is the part everyone wants to know, so I’ll be completely transparent.
My all-inclusive BBL Istanbul package at Estelux included:
- BBL surgery with Op. Dr. Uğurlu
- 360 liposuction (abdomen, flanks, back, bra fat) for fat harvest
- General anaesthesia with anaesthesiologist
- Pre-operative blood tests and ECG
- 1 night in hospital with private room and nursing
- 6 nights at a 4-star hotel
- VIP airport transfers (both ways)
- Personal patient coordinator (24/7 WhatsApp support)
- Post-operative compression garment
- Aftercare medication kit
- 2 lymphatic drainage massage sessions
- 12 months of remote follow-up support
I also paid for:
- Round-trip flights from Miami: $740
- Travel insurance: $85
- Spending money: $200
Total trip cost: under $8,500.
The cheapest legitimate quote I had received in the US was $18,500 for the surgery alone.
Travelling to Istanbul
I flew Miami to Istanbul direct on Turkish Airlines. The flight was 11 hours, which is long, but I’d flown longer for vacation. Business class would have been ideal but I couldn’t justify the extra cost — economy was fine.
My driver was waiting at arrivals with a sign with my name on it. He took my bags, walked me to a private car, and drove me to my hotel — clean, modern, in a safe area called Şişli, ten minutes from the clinic.
My patient coordinator Selin met me at the hotel within an hour of check-in. She walked me through the schedule for the next few days, made sure I had bottled water, gave me a Turkish SIM card with data, and told me she’d be available 24/7 on WhatsApp.
I felt looked after immediately. Which, frankly, was the opposite of how I’d felt at every US consultation I’d had.
Pre-Op Day
The day before surgery, I went to the hospital for blood tests, ECG, chest X-ray, and a final consultation with Dr. Uğurlu and the anaesthesiologist.
The hospital was modern, clean, and surprisingly quiet. Nothing like the chaotic horror stories I’d read about Turkish medical tourism. Staff spoke English. Equipment was new. I was treated with respect throughout.
Dr. Uğurlu spent over an hour with me. He marked my body for the BBL surgery and 360 liposuction with surgical precision, taking photos from every angle and explaining exactly what he would do. He answered the few last questions I had. He told me to be ready at 6:30am the next morning.
Surgery Day
I won’t lie — I was nervous walking into the hospital that morning. I’d thought about cancelling probably forty times overnight. But the nurses were calm, the anaesthesiologist was warm, and Dr. Uğurlu greeted me with a confidence that immediately made me feel safe.
The surgery took approximately five hours. 360 liposuction first — abdomen, flanks, back, bra roll. Then careful processing of the harvested fat. Then meticulous fat injection into specific areas of my glutes using ultrasound guidance.
I woke up in the recovery room at around 1pm. I felt pressure, soreness, and the strange tightness of the compression garment, but I wasn’t in severe pain. The anaesthesia management was exceptional — I never once felt the panic-level pain that some US BBL patients describe.
I stayed in hospital that night. Private room. Comfortable bed. Nurses checked on me every hour. Selin came by twice to make sure I had everything I needed.
Recovery in Istanbul
The next morning, Dr. Uğurlu came to discharge me. He reviewed my results, confirmed I was healing properly, and showed me the photos he’d taken at the end of surgery. The shape was already extraordinary.
I spent the next five days at the hotel recovering. Selin checked in every morning and afternoon. Lymphatic drainage massage on day three and day five — these are essential for BBL recovery and most US clinics don’t include them. I won’t lie — the massages hurt. But they make a massive difference to swelling and final results.
The “BBL pillow life” was real. I sat on a special pillow, slept on my stomach, and used the bathroom carefully. The compression garment was non-negotiable. The first three days were genuinely uncomfortable. By day five, I was walking comfortably.
I had a final post-op check with Dr. Uğurlu before flying home. He cleared me to fly, gave me detailed instructions for the next three months, and confirmed Selin would remain available via WhatsApp throughout my recovery.
Flying Home and Long-Term Recovery
The flight home was harder than the flight there. I wore my compression garment, used a BBL pillow on the plane (yes, I looked ridiculous, no I didn’t care), and walked the aisles every two hours to prevent blood clots. I took a sleeping pill and got through it.
The first month was the hardest part of recovery. The “fluffing” stage — where the swelling reduces and you can finally see your real results — took about four months. By month six, my final shape was completely settled.
Dr. Uğurlu and Selin remained available throughout. Every question I had about scarring, swelling, what was normal, what wasn’t — they answered within hours.
The Results: Six Months Later
I am writing this six months after my BBL Istanbul surgery. My results are everything I hoped for.
The shape is natural. The proportions are exactly what I wanted — fuller hips, more defined waist, lifted glutes that look like a really intense gym routine, not surgery. The 360 liposuction transformed my torso. My waist is smaller. My back fat is gone. The whole effect is balanced and beautiful in a way that no amount of working out could have achieved.
I wear clothes I never thought I could wear. I went to the beach last weekend in a bikini and felt confident for the first time in my life.
The scarring from the lipo cannulas is virtually invisible. The slight asymmetry I had at three months has completely settled. My body looks like me, just turned up.
What I Wish I’d Known Before BBL Istanbul
1. The compression garment is a 24/7 commitment for 6-8 weeks. Wear it. Always. It directly affects your final results.
2. Lymphatic drainage massages are essential. Most US clinics don’t include them. Estelux included two and recommended I get more at home — I did, and they made a difference.
3. The “fluffing” stage is real. You will look swollen and weird for the first 6-8 weeks. Don’t panic. Don’t message your surgeon every day with photos. Trust the process.
4. Sleeping on your stomach for two months is harder than the surgery. Get a good pillow. Buy a BBL bed setup before you fly home. Don’t try to figure it out as you go.
5. The flight home is hard but doable. Wear compression. Use a pillow. Walk around. Hydrate. You’ll be fine.
6. Don’t compare your results to Instagram. Most BBL Instagram accounts show heavily edited photos at peak swelling — the moment when results look most exaggerated. Real, settled BBL results are more subtle, more natural, and far more beautiful.
Would I Do It Again?
Without question.
The combination of Op. Dr. Uğurlu’s surgical skill, the genuine 24/7 care from Selin and the Estelux team, and the comprehensive support throughout the process made this an experience I am honestly grateful for.
The cost savings were significant — I paid roughly a third of what I would have paid in the US for an equivalent procedure. But more importantly, I genuinely believe my outcome is better than what I would have received at any US clinic in my budget range.
If you are considering a BBL and the cost or quality concerns of US BBL surgery have made you hesitate, I would seriously encourage you to look into BBL Istanbul at Estelux. Not just as a cheaper option — as a genuinely excellent one.
Do your research. Ask hard questions. Look at the surgeon’s specific BBL portfolio. But don’t dismiss the option just because it’s far away. The best decision I made for my body was getting on that plane.
